The Swimmers by Julie Otsuka
4.0
okay first off, you keep on the left side of the lane in public pool lap swimming, never the right side because that would just make tumbleturns uncomfortable.
in all seriousness that was beautiful!!! initially I didn't love the sort of 'listing' writing style, but it is actually really pretty plus it makes sense in context with the themes of the story as you keep reading. I loved how its set out, with the first part in collective first person a very accurate description of pool life, and the next two parts coming to rip your heart out. it felt so personal and it did make me cry because it reminded me of my grandma. very very good, wanna read some more Julie Otsuka :)
