The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett

5.0

The Vanishing Half was everything I wanted it to be and more. This is such a rich story with so many elements and themes that seamlessly intertwine.

Set from the 1950s to the 1990s, this is a story about the Vignes sisters (identical twins) who live in a small southern black community and both run away at the age of sixteen. One returns eventually with her black daughter and the other moves across country and secretly passes for a white woman.

Told not only from each sister’s point of view, but also their daughters and the people that love them, many secrets get unravelled, desires and expectations come to light.

Having said all that, this book plays an important role is shedding light on colourism, racism and even gender. You find out why one sister wants to be white, what they had to go through and the ideas of white privilege and supremacy. The fact that even people in their own community back home are uncomfortable with the other sister’s black daughter.

Brit Bennet tells the most riveting story that I want to immediately tell everyone to read. It’s educational, gripping and the book that will make you want to read more from her.
