Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning by Liz Cheney

5.0

Set aside one's own policy or partisan beliefs and listen to what Cheney is saying. Her warning is well supported and not idle. This should be required reading in civics classes - oh, wait, we don't really have those any more. When I tell people I am reading this book I get two responses "oh, she's just positioning herself to run for president," or "I wouldn't read that, because I don't agree with her policies." Each of these views miss the point - our Constitution and Democracy was, and is, under attack by Donald Trump and his supporters. Our form of government and loyalty to the Constitution over men is exactly the thing that gives us the freedom to debate our policy differences and to choose our direction as a nation. We lose that and what we have left is governance by fear and by whim. When the Constitution and Democracy are subverted, all that is left is to fall in line with the strong man and either sink or swim according to his will and preference, not one's own. This is anti-American on its face. We should listen to, and take seriously, Cheney's warning regardless of whether or not one agrees with her policy views.
