The Chosen One by Carol Lynch Williams
5.0
This is not the kind of book that I would normally read. I picked it up because it was HIGHLY recommended at a seminar for librarians called "Dewey Divas," where publishers introduce their very favourite new books.
I'm so glad that I finally picked this one up. The story is completely gripping - I literally could not put it down. Williams' story never gets preachy or graphic. The characters are all so believable, they seem real. There is an awesome librarian character, which I always appreciate.
Kyra is 13 when she finds out that the Prophet has decided she should marry her cruel and elderly uncle. But what no one knows is that Kyra is already in love, with a boy her own age. And Kyra is secretly visiting a bookmobile, and reading books - which are banned in the colony. And these secrets - or a refusal to marry her uncle - could mean death for Kyra. Will she follow her heart, and risk her life?
A fantastic book - read it even if you don't think you're interested. You will be!
