The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yōko Ogawa

I wasn’t sure if the centrality of math to the story would add or detract from the story, but Ogawa manages to convey the ideas and importance of math without talking down to the characters or the audience. Much like Memory police I think I respected what Ogawa was doing with the story more than I personally enjoyed it.
