Synopsis:
Hayes Rutherford is the last single male heterosexual billionaire left in the world, and he wishes everyone would forget. He has just been promoted to CFO of his family's entertainment company, Razzle Dazzle, after his cousin died in an accident and he just wants to do his job and live his life as a single grumpster. But his family is hell bent on throwing all the single women in their social circles in his path. After his brothers wedding Hayes escapes to one of his homes on the coast of Maine only to discover that it has been broken into by a woman and her dog.
Begonia Fairchild is recently divorced and wants to take herself on an adventure to find herself again, but on her high school arts teacher salary and with her dog in tow. So when she finds a mansion on a vacation rental site for only $50 a night she can't turn it down! Except she is regretting her decision to go on her adventure when she is in the midst of waxing herself and she has a man yelling at her that she has broken into his house!
So what happens when an unlikely duo sign a contract to fake date for two weeks to keep Hayes' family out of his business and Begonia doesn't owe Hayes money for the priceless statue her overzealous dog used as a chew toy?
Thoughts:
I had so much fun reading this book! It was a very unexpected surprise and I quickly fell head over heels for this story and these characters that in so many ways seem like they should not be compatible but are exactly what each other needs.
There were several bits in the book that left me confused, like how Hayes often comes off as being British but never mentions where he is from and all his homes are in the United States so I'm not sure if this he was just supposed to "sound rich" or if some context was taken out in editing. It also felt like some of the recent past of the characters wasn't quite as fleshed out in the story as other pieces from their more 'distant' past which made following their personal timelines a bit confusing at times.
Even with what I would call "bumpy bits" that would take me out of the story in a way that I would really have to spend time thinking about them I had so much fun reading this book. It made me laugh pretty much immediately it was so outrageous and it made me giggle, blush, and gasp so many times I lost count. I love when a romance book can fully take me out of my own reality and take me to the reality of the characters and I felt like that's what happened in this one!
Tropes:
Grumpy/Sunshine
Fake Dating
Forced Proximity
