“Life was fragile and fleeting and mostly out of your control, and all you could do was surround yourself with good people, do your best.”
There is just something about Lucy Clarke's writing that I'm never able to resist, and I've been slowly working my way through her backlist. I was immediately drawn to One Of The Girls; both because of that Greek setting and because of that promise of many secrets and a trip that ends in murder. That last bit might sound like a spoiler, but as you have no clue who dies until it finally happens it somehow only adds to the suspense. Especially since there is one character in particular I wouldn't have minded to end up dead... That wish didn't come true by the way, but the real ending was somehow even better. Oh yes, One Of The Girls will mess with your mind and has so many twists, turns and reveals that it's simply impossible to stop reading. This story uses a multiple POV structure where we switch between the six women on the bachelorette trip in short chapters that keep the pace high. Short chapters don't always work for me, as it's harder to get to know the characters, but somehow in this book the structure was perfect for the plot. The fact that every single woman is hiding something really adds to the suspense, and I loved how the story was able to put me on the wrong track multiple times with little clues that end up being there to try to mislead you. The story is very cleverly plotted, that's for sure! One Of The Girls isn't just a story of female friendship gone wrong, and it tackles multiple heavier topics along the way. It was all well blended into the plot though, and the Greek setting was without doubt a bonus. All in all this might just be one of my favorite Lucy Clarke stories to date!
