Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett

4.0

I read Guards! Guards! after I had sworn off fantasy for a while. I had grown to hate the incredibly long and convoluted story lines that seemed to inhabit every major fantasy novel and I hated how everything had to be serialized. I heard about GG and heard that it made fun if a lot if those things and its dedication was to the people who are not destined to be heroes. I checked it out and have been thankful that I now had the entire Discworld series to dive into and I could begin to appreciate fantasy again.

As for the book itself, it introduces the watch which is my favorite DW storyline. I love the noir stories set in a fantasy world. Plus vimes and his crew seem so much more realized than any of the other major characters who often serve for more obvious comedy. It's relative weakness stems from the fact that since this is the first watch novel it doesn't feel as lived-in as the ones that would come after it. Still, this what I recommend to anyone looking to start reading DW.
