The Rainbow Fish
by Marcus Pfister
Okay, so books teaching kids to share are generally good things, but this one got on my nerves.
The message I got was: "kids, you're not allowed to be unique or embrace something special about yourself because the other kids will be jealous and won't play with you. Trust me, you'll be much happier when you blend in like a good little lemming."
Now, granted the rainbow fish was sort of a jerk about it at first, but really it is possible to show that it's good to share AND be yourself.
On top of that, this story struck me as semi creepy since it wasn't a toy or some other thing he was giving away, but actual, physical parts of himself.... yeah... gross.
