I really liked the concept of the story. When I chose this book as my Amazon First Reads for June, I was thinking it sounded familiar to the novel "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" by Lisa See, which I absolutely adored; Sending coded messages to best friends via art, love this so much!

However, I did find the story a little lack luster. Perhaps it is the translation, perhaps it was that I anticipated more "back and forth" between the friends, I'm not exactly sure, but I found it hard to stay engaged.

I did endure to the finish, which I felt was a little abrupt. I also took umbrage to Alice modernizing the veil with her own newly learnt lace-making skills - Nooooooo! That's a historical piece of heirloom artwork, don't do anything to it except to ensure it is preserved! If the curse of the Flores women was just about to end with this generation, it may actually be the renewed for that particular sacrilege.
