This was such a fun start to the duology! Meyer is a comfort author for me, if you’ve already read and enjoyed some of her works then I defo rec this too, but it’s not the best of her work.
If you’re like me and struggle reading cosy fantasy bc you need higher stakes, this fits those vibes perfectly. It’s grimdark, has Meyer’s trademark immersive world building, a kindhearted female protagonist, a sweetly budding romance. Meyer paces it so well, all the climactic points were exactly where they needed to be. And despite the darker elements, I actually found Serilda and her antics quite funny-- especially her first meeting with the Erlking.
The ending leaves off with enough tension that I will be immediately picking up the sequel, Cursed!
