So I am writing a review for the whole of series here since god, I can't remember what volumes I read, I just read it all online in a half delirious binge in a span of a day.
MAJOR SPOILERS AND MENTION OF SEXUAL ASSAULT
Now, I love this series with my whole chest. What a great cast of characters, plot, and otherworldly humor that spans through this series. It really plays out with what the author thought would be the craziest thing that could be happen and took it even a step further. And god the emotional damage you get, normally completely out of left field. I cried a number of times reading this and had me clutching my chest from the grief of it sometimes.
However, as seen by my content warning tags, there is a pretty graphic attempt of sexual assault in the beginning. It's play off kinda as humorous and many people have taken to the internet to speak about it. I mean, content warnings should ALWAYS be front in center, especially for triggering content. I wouldn't even recommend this for people with this trigger honestly due to this. But, I have seen a number of people saying the show and manga needs to be canceled for this scene in particular. And while the humor of it can be rubbed off on me the wrong way, the rest of the series really will surpise you about how it treats women. I mean silky acrobat? Her whole story was about a struggling single mother who had the whole system stacked against her. Turbo granny? A spirit of women who were sexually assaulted and murdered. Reiko Kashima? A girl who was killed during a airplane bombing in a war. Balmora? The only kid left of a war where it left only older women in care of her. Rin Sawaki? A girl who at a young was expected to care for her grandma while her single mother struggled to pay bills. Honestly, and very unexpectedly, does this series highlight struggles of women especially. Even for the yokai who are often the bad guys at times do you feel sorry for and an understanding of what they are doing. Is the series a perfect description of women's struggles? No, 100% not. But if you want a cast of characters who's flaws are front and center, a plot where you absolutely never know where it is going, and a set of humor where is more than likely punch you in the face with it, this series is for you.
(Though fuck the aliens in the manga for real, nasty little fuckers. Expect you Mr Mantis Shrimp, best dad of the year goes to you.)
