Don't Shoot the Dog!: The New Art of Teaching and Training by Karen Pryor

informative inspiring medium-paced

5.0

(Review of 2022 reread)

It was great going back to this book and looking at it through the lens of a now trainer instead of a trainee. I was actually able to understand and conceptualize the ideas Pryor discussed in this book. I feel like I need to reread this again and again because there's always learning that can be done from just going back to the basics. Overall no change in rating nor in my opinions below. Just a greater appreciation for it all.

I read this book as part of the curriculum for a dog training apprenticeship program.

Karen Pryor is one of the most notable names in dog training (and animal behavior training in general) for a reason, she truly understand her material and knows how to explain it well. This book did a great job at going in depth on how to approach training animals and humans alike in positive ways. Anyone looking to train their dog, their children, or their dolphins to behave need to read this book. In fact, the world would probably operate better if everyone read this book; it goes so in depth on how positively reinforcing ourselves and the people around us (not just the animals in our lives) that I can't see how anyone could still believe that punishment or "corrective" training is the best way to deal with unfavorable situations.

Overall this was a very practical and informative book and I would highly recommend it to anyone as a self-help book or way to kick off their dog training career.
