Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata

3.0

Interesting but flawed.

We follow our main character who sees her calling as being a convenience store worker. Happy with her niche, she has to fend off questions from her family and friends about why she hasn't gotten married and settled down, or moved on to a career job. I enjoyed her inner monologue and how she just noticed things about the store. I could at times empathize with her difficulties understanding her coworkers.

What drags my enjoyment down is the complete and utter waste of a human being her partner is. I'm sure that his speeches and role are intended to grate on us and function as additional social commentary but I did NOT like him and did not enjoy his parts of the story.
