The Peacock Detectives by Carly Nugent
Cassie is an imaginative narrator who intersperses her story with careful explanations of writing and storytelling.
The story cleverly explores a number of issues from an eleven year old perspective, but particularly some ways in which parents can fail their children. As an adult reading this it is a little frustrating, but I think very validating for a child reader. It definitely made me think a lot about the power dynamics between parents and children.
My favourite parts of the story were Cassie’s relationships with her sister Diana and with Jonas and Rhea.
