briannabee 's review for:
Under Loch and Key
by Lana Ferguson
I've noticed many of the reviews on this express dismay at the monsterfucking bits of this book. Which is surprising - the bits are pretty tame! MMC is only partially shifted during. The sex in the book is pretty enjoyable and well written.
My mediocre rating comes from the MMC just being a douche to the FMC for a good chunk of the beginning of the book. It's in a childish way, too. Super unappealing. Mocking her, calling her stupid and clumsy and calling her Princess after she repeatedly tells him not to. Not as a secretly affectionate nickname. Just pure mockery.
When they finally get together it's clear he has reasons both physical and personal to fall for her. On her end, there is nothing in his personality to make her fall for him. He's just good looking. Where there are specifically enumerated and spoken characteristics that he loves about her, there's no way for her to reciprocate because honestly, the only personality trait this man possesses is being an 'arse.' As is said over and over again within the text.
I'm all for a good grumpy meets sunshine dynamic, but this is not grumpy. This is asshole. Yuck.
