Is This All There Is? by Patricia Mann

In today's society, putting your children above everything else is an expectation. The problem with that is if you don't focus on your spouse and your relationship it will simply fade away over time. This story aptly depicts the result of many years of neglect by both spouses. Neglect breeds indifference and bitterness.

The household chores, activities, and routines which at the beginning of her children's lives filled Beth with comfort and a sense of accomplishment began to weigh her down. She asked herself, “Do they [other women] passionately love and loathe their families at the same time?” “Do other women fantasize about living a different life?”

I think a lot of women can relate to what Beth was feeling at both of these statements. The neglect by Rick caused her to seek out attention and affection first from her children and then from another man. The excitement of having something for herself outside her marriage got her in a predictable mess. I thought the story was well done, but the ending felt a bit rushed to me. I would have like a little more closure with an epilogue.
