The Wrong Side of Right
by Jennifer Marie Thorne
I'm usually annoyed by book blurbs that are described as "this book meets this book!" because they rarely live up to whatever author/book they're being compared to. Yet a guaranteed way to make me read a book is to describe it as the lovechild of Sarah Dessen, Huntley Fitzpatrick, and Aaron Sorkin...then make that description ACTUALLY BE TRUE.
Kate's voice was excellently teenagery, Andy was a good mix of overconfident douchebag teenage boy and kind, and the parental relationship with Meg was awesome. Nancy was a great character and her twists and turns both annoyed and interested me.
This book had the potential to be another cheesy YA contemp (which, no judgment, because that's basically my favorite genre), but the writing was so good it was quickly edged out of that category. Sure, there were cheesy moments, and there was a lot of predictable stuff that happened, but overall it was a thoroughly enjoyable read.
EDIT: Reread 1/21/2020: I still like this book so much. It's so smart and fun and swoony.
