In Ascension by Martin MacInnes

Did not finish book. Stopped at 26%.
My thalassophobia won't let me finish. It gave me nightmares. I'm sure it's really beautiful, but I caught myself skipping whole passages, like I was squishing my eyes closed, out of sheer terror. I'm quiting for my sanity.

Also it's very slow. And there are 2 mildly weird things about the main character (to someone who is also Dutch):
1. She talks to and about her parents using their first names. Not that this doesn't happen here, but it is uncommon and feels very weird.
2. The family is very Dutch. Dad's from Rotterdam, named Geert, mom's from Groningen or Friesland, named Fenna. Sister's name is Helena. There is no indication that there's any foreign language spoken in the house at all. But the main character's name is Leigh. The most un-Dutch name ever. Took me out of the story every time.
