Emma
by Jane Austen
“I cannot make speeches, Emma... If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more.”
Jane Austen owns my heart, my body and my soul. To my 14 yo self, it would have been shocking to spend 3 months reading one book. It would have meant that I was trapped in a reading slump, that it was taking me so long to read it simply bc i was bored and did not want to pick it up. But 19 yo me has fallen in LOVE with reading classics slowly, steadily, picking up every detail, paying attention to the style, the writing, the themes, the character development.
The same thing happened to me with Wuthering Heights. It was difficult to get past the first few chapters, bc the writing was complicated, there were lots of names, the descriptions of the sceneries were long… but once i got past my first negative impressions, and got used to the writing style, i became addicted. It took me 2 months to read it, not bc it was hard or boring, but bc i was taking pleasure absorbing the drama and the adventure slowly. And so it was just like that with Emma!! Reading it for such long periods of time rlly made me feel fully immersed in the story, like I was another lady living in Highbury looking for a potential match, or for some gossip
