I feel like each book Cashore writes gets more sophisticated. This has been her most impressive one so far. I've read a lot of complaints about the length and/or slowness of the plot but I thought it worked really well for a book so deeply centered on internal conflict. The main thrust of the novel was less an adventure story than it was Bitterblue's coming of age and her learning how to help her kingdom recuperate from trauma. I never felt it was too drawn out, healing is something that takes time. Enjoyed the whole thing hugely. 5 stars
