A Natural Woman: A Memoir by Carole King

5.0

I listened to the audiobook read by Carole King. It is the best memoir I've read. First of all I was predisposed to love it, because I was in my 20s when Tapestry came out and I first heard her name and music. Like everyone I knew, I loved that sound. Secondly, her life story is so very fascinating and rich. Add to that, she tells the story so well. There are so many great people involved, lots of places of interest, much overcoming, and a very uplifting view of it all. She and her story are inspirational. And if that isn't enough, she sings a capella here and there throughout. If you listen to the acknowledgements at the end, you will here some excellent music that I had not heard before and stay until the very, very end and you'll hear a piece created for the audiobook that they couldn't fit in and she just plugged in there so as not to be missed.

In the book there is a lot of musical history and listening to it I failed to get it all. The entire story is so good, that listening once to an audio I borrowed from the library is not going to be enough. I'm going to buy a copy of the ebook to read again. I will also need to catch up on the music I missed being away from the U.S. a good part of the '80s. If you are of an age to remember Tapestry, I'm pretty sure you'll want to read this book, and hearing her read it is probably the most beautiful way to do that.
