Kindred: A Graphic Novel Adaptation by Octavia E. Butler

5.0

I read this book in 2 days. It was engrossing. This had been on my to-read list and I decided to read it as part of the Book Riot Read Harder challenge.

This work is incredible. I read Kindred in school and didn’t quite “get” it. After revisiting Octavia Butler’s work last year and enjoying my read of Parable of the Sower, I was excited to learn about this book.

This story suits the graphic novel format brilliantly. The violence, emotion, energy and stress of the story really surface in this format. The art is stark and poignant. It’s an emotionally challenging story on its own; the visuals compound that feeling. I absorbed the story more easily this go around and I recommend this book strongly.
