Within the Hollow Heart
by Melissa Wright
Nikolas’ mother trusses him up to force him into a marriage with a Lady Carvell for the good of their family. However, Nikolas makes his escape and runs into a young lady named Jules who offers a bargain to help him avoid the betrothal to Lady Carvell by pretending to be betrothed to Jules instead and then in return help Jules get out of the betrothal she’s being forced into. Nikolas happily agrees, but now has to somehow avoid his mother finding out and also to figure out what Jules real agenda is.
I loved Beyond the Filigree Wall, and so I was excited to read the next book in the Rivenwilde series. These are standalones within the same world, and so you can read them out of order.
One thing I love about this book, and it’s the same for the first book in this series, is the style of writing. It’s very…fairytale-like. Very Grimm brothers fairytale in that it’s a fantasy, without the heavy description you may find in a lot of fantasies, but enough description to make it fantastical and whimsical and very much a fairytale. I love the author’s writing, it just makes me feel like I’m little again reading fairytales.
The romance is also very sweet. Nikolas is like this grumpy puppy, but is still charming and flirty, especially with the ladies, and he was a fun character to read about, especially since it’s told from his POV. Jules was much more of an enigma. I couldn’t get a read on her until basically the end and you’re just like wow okay, she had a lot going on
