I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid

5.0

I’m thinking of ending things by Iain Reid is a complete mindfuck. For all we know at the start it’s about Lucy, a girl who wants to end things with her boyfriend Jake, but is struggling to fully decide if that’s what she wants. She decides to visit Jake’s parents with him to see if that can help with her choice.

But once she gets there things are strange with his parents and their home, it’s old, with photos and paintings all over the walls of children, grandparents that Jake doesn’t even know. Lucy sees a photo that Jake says is himself but it’s actually her? So creepy.

The end completely caught me off guard, I thought that it was indeed about Lucy but it turns out it’s about Jake. He didn’t even know Lucy, she was just a girl he saw once at a pub trivia night. We don’t even know if Lucy is her name.

After each chapter we got to see some italic writing that looked like a conversation about someone killing themselves but we don’t know who. Until the end of the book, where we realise it’s Jake, he kills himself and leaves a story as his suicide note.

Overall I believe that Iain Reid did an amazing job with this book, it’s extremely creepy. It made me think about every little noise I heard while reading, I had a fear that someone was watching me, just like Lucy had.
