Islands of Abandonment by Cal Flyn

adventurous challenging dark emotional hopeful informative reflective sad slow-paced

4.0

Will be recommending this book to a lot of people, the writing style is evocative, Flyn creates a real sense of each location despite the huge variety. This book looks at places that humans have abandoned by choice or otherwise, whether from environmental catastrophes, socio/political/economic collapse, warfare or toxins. While it could easily have been a depressing read, Flyn manages to tread a silver lining for most of the book, the way nature has bounced back (or even flourished for a specific definition) in different ways after humanity takes a step back. The final two chapters are more of a warning, as Flyn makes sure this book isn't used as a free pass. Overall a very informative read, and very engaging.
