The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy
4.0

The story is interesting, although ambitious. All of the American characters (apart from Jack Ryan) are identical. Brave man! Allowed to flourish under American freedom structure! This is contrasted with All Russians Who Follow the Regime But Just Want To Make It To Retirement. In that regard, there are only 5 basic characters. In actuality there are around 30-40 perspectives. With such similar personalities, it can be hard to remember where all of the minor characters are. Quite a few sequences of events are ultimately insignificant. The "other" cook? The Russians shooting at those planes or something? Various "hey let's do this as a distraction so they don't find us!" scenes get repetitive.
