Fighting the Fire by Laura Kaye

5.0

Laura Kaye is BACK!! This final installment in the Warrior Fight Club series was perfect!

Daniela England is a former Army helicopter evac nurse, who now works in the ER. She's also a member of the Warrior Fight Club, and sparring with her friends helps keep her demons at bay. Her husband, who was also in the Army, died in combat 6 years ago, and she's been protecting her heart ever since. After a lifetime of her loved ones leaving her too soon, she's determined to never risk her emotions on love again. But, another fighter in the group gets under her skin in all the ways she's been trying to avoid. So, she responds with sarcasm, and they have a strong frenemies vibe, until one night their chemistry blazes out of control. They both decide it can't happen again, but then a motorcycle accident changes everything between them.

Sean Riddick, is a former Navy man, and a firefighter, and he loves his job. He also loves all the benefits he gets from being a part of the Warrior Fight Club. He feels like he's damaged goods, after growing up with an abusive father, and losing friends in the service, that he feels responsible for. The spark between him and Dani is huge, but he knows it can't go anywhere. Until it does, once, and he thinks that's all he'll get. But after he gets into a motorcycle crash, and she steps up to help him out, he wonders if there could be more to their banter after all.

Sean and Dani's back-and-forth was excellent, and their connection jumped off the page. It was also clear to everyone who knew them, so all their WFC friends were always wondering when they would finally combust. I loved watching them dig beneath the surface and truly get to know each other during Sean's recovery. They both discovered how little they actually knew about each other, and found out how much they had in common.

The side characters here, all of Dani and Sean's friends from the WFC, were all seen in the prior books, and it was fun to catch up with them and see how their lives are continuing on. They often acted as a sounding board for the main couple, and they all really care for each other.

The dead ex trope is not usually my jam, but it worked for me in this book, I think because of the length of time that had passed, and how it was all laid out. I thought that Dani was finally ready to move on, and it felt like a realistic time line. Other tropes in this book that I always love, that also worked well here included frenemies to lovers, and sick bed/one caring for the other. I really believed in Sean and Dani as a couple, and I wanted them to figure things out.

I got teary eyed a couple times in this book, and then full-on sobbed towards the end. It was such a beautiful story, and the characters came to mean so much to me! I really enjoy this author's words, and I'm so glad she's back to writing them!

I received an advanced copy of this book from the author. This review is my personal opinion, voluntarily given.
