Chinese Cinderella: The True Story of an Unwanted Daughter
by Adeline Yen Mah
Maybe because I read this alone or because I read this outside of her target age group (if she had one) but I did not see the masterpiece in this. I feel like I read some child's diary. I say a child's diary because it mostly was a description of events and maybe a, "I felt sad." here and there. A teenager would have written more about their emotions. Also, I understand that she was neglected and felt inferior her whole childhood, but after reading other books about abuse and substance abuse, I cannot read her words as pitiful as she wants me to. I'm sorry she feels cheated but I hope she realizes she wasn't too bad off. She was even removed from the house for a time to live in boarding houses. She might have felt embarrassed certain days but she had friends who cared for her and she didn't have to live in fear of her step-mother abusing her. She was given schooling (even college), food, and clothes, and had relatives that loved her even if it wasn't her father and step-mother. I just am not clear about the hype of this book.
