Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

4.0

Thank you to Del Ray and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2023 & I was NOT disappointed.

The story follows Montserrat & Tristán as they try to unfold the mystery of a lost film - a film created by a nazi occultist.

This book was a gruesome love letter, filled with horror, to film and the occult. The descriptions of the action & horror were truly cinematic. Being set in the 90s, it really had that horror feel of the time period - dark humor mixed into the gore.

Moreno-Garcia has a way with the character dynamics in all her books. I love the depth of strength the women have (almost “masculine”) and the emotive & sensitive nature of the male characters (almost feminine attributes). The characters always tend to subvert the stereotypical masc/gem personality traits which I truly enjoy. Montserrat & Tristán are no exception. I love the anti-hero / reluctant hero nature of both characters.

I would get into more detail about Montserrat’s character but I don’t want to spoil anything but I loved how she admitted she was “tempted.” it reflected how she was a flawed hero - by what was she tempted? You’ll see.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book - as always Moreno-Garcia does not disappoint.

The only issue I foresee is with the pacing, the build up at the beginning felt a little slow but 40% onward the pacing quickened and studied out. The ending was highly entertaining & I much appreciated the choice in ending. I’m glad Montserrat & Tristán got a “happy” ending.
