We'll Prescribe You a Cat by Syou Ishida

Did not finish book. Stopped at 40%.
dark emotional sad
Audiobook version:
The first hour is depressing, goes only a little into his symptoms and getting the cat but a lot about the unhealthy workplace where workers are shamed and the drama there and him getting fired and being bullied at the previous workplace. His parents expectations about his job. The cat is destructive and keeps getting him in trouble. There are some rather unpleasant characters shouting and being mean. There's a pretty disturbing story about the cats siblings dying of starvation when their owner died. Not the cosy slice of life magical realism read I was looking for!
The narrator isn't good he keeps mispronouncing things, which had me trying to figure out what he meant every so often. Might be triggering if you have bad memories about your pets being ill, abused animals or lost a cat...
I enjoy magical realism and what you are looking for is in the library, but this book is far more negative with no magical realism in chapter 1 and boring with too many unnecessary details in places.
I wanted so much to like it.
