I LOVED this so much. Possibly my top pick of 2023 so far? I felt so much for (and with) both Alexis and Daniel. There was enough heaviness to ground the sweet romance and give it depth without completely dragging this into “women’s fiction” territory. CW for domestic abuse, both physical and emotional, as well as emotional abuse between dad and daughter—breaking the cycle and all that.

The maybe-magic of Daniel’s small town, Wakan, was so sweet. The people of the town were so varied and interesting, I could absolutely envision living there. Alexis’s world, in contrast, is so sterile and unimaginative. We don’t even get a description of her house until Daniel shows up and sees it. She is so enmeshed in her wealth and privilege that she can’t see her surroundings through the eyes of someone with less. The lack of detail is not surprising as she is feeling so lost in her own life.

My only teeny tiny criticism, and it is barely anything really, is that Daniel’s and Alexis’s voices were a little too similar. I sometimes had to check another paragraph to remember which mind we were in. I also kind of saw the ending coming but not quite in the way it actually played out. It was a wonderful fairy tale ending while somehow not being quite as sappy as the Disney movies the whole book alludes to.

Love, love, love it. I’ll be picking up more from Abby Jimenez soon.

Reread: Still LOVE it
