Plague Birds by Jason Sanford

The base concept of AIs and humans merging is really interesting - but this book gets SO convoluted in a way that isn't supported by the writing. It throws a lot of world-building information at you, but I didn't feel invested in it at all. Either this book needed like 200 extra pages to build itself up, or be reduced to a novella that's more focused on Crista and Red Day's complex relationship. The final battle wraps up really quickly and is essentially one big backstory info-dump. I didn't really care about any of the characters other than Crista. The story has a lot of curveballs, sure, but it just feels like it's throwing a bunch of ideas at the wall to see what sticks. Overall this is an intriguing concept that doesn't really rise to its potential.
