Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli
5.0

Oh wow! I absolutely adored this book. It was so wonderfully sweet and human. The story was so very age appropriate and I really felt like these were high school kids dealing with the idea of coming out and first loves. So beautifully told in a light hearted manner that took nothing away from the depth of the subject matter. I flew through this book and couldn't put it down.

Simon is a junior in high school with an over the top theatrical family. He's active in school activities including the school play. He's a typical teenager hiding one key piece of himself. He's gay. And now he's being blackmailed about it. One of his fellow students, Martin, discovered his secret emails to another gay student and is using screen shots to blackmail Simon into helping Martin get in with Simon's friend Abby. The last thing Simon wants his his own sexuality exposed, but he's even more concerned about Blue. Their emails may be anonymous, but Simon's developing feelings for his secret pen pal and the last thing he wants is to see Blue hurt in anyway. Having their personal correspondences out there for anyone to read would kill him and any future chance of getting to know who Blue really is would be gone.

Simon was so awesome in this story. I loved his voice. It was so authentic and real. He was such a wonderful kid and you really felt for him in all that he was experiencing trying to maneuver his way through high school politics. He has a great family and wonderful friends support. I liked watching him figure out how to approach his sexuality and revealing it to those around him. The emails between Blue and Simon were so cute. They made me smile every time the email chapter breaks came up.

The structure of this story was very fun switching back and forth between the action of Simon's daily life and the emails he was exchanging with Blue. It flowed very smoothly and kept the action flipping along. There were some really nice moments in this story and for all that it's really a slice of life story it was incredibly entertaining.

The mystery of who is Blue was such a cute method of telling this story. I really enjoyed Simon's preoccupation and thought process as he parsed through the clues he had and tried to put it all together. The ultimate reveal was everything you could want it to be and was handled pretty much perfectly. I really loved these two boys and everything they brought to each other.

Overall this book was really just adorable and warmth inducing. It made me smile throughout and painted a beautiful picture of high school young love and discovery. Highly recommend. :)
