Requiem for a Mezzo by Carola Dunn

3.0

Requiem For A Mezzo is one of the early books in the Daisy Dalrymple series although Alec is already contemplating asking her to marry him. A neighbor is a rising star and is singing in Verdi's Requiem. Her sister who lives with the singer and her much older husband and voice coach has offered Daisy two tickets. She invited Alec to go.

Bettina, the Mezzo, has a reputation for too many love affairs, despite her marital status, as well as being a bully to her sister and others. One of the things that she insists upon is a glass of her favorite almond flavored liqueur nearby. She drinks and prepares to sing, but instead collapses and dies instantly. it is determined to be cyanide poisoning which smells like almonds as anyone who ever read an Agatha Christie novel knows.

There are quite a few suspects as Bettina is not well liked at all. There are a number of turns and twists in this book, but in the end the murderer confesses in a dramatic Agatha Christie type unveiling scene. In the meantime, we have met Alec's daughter, Belinda, and Daisy is on her way to meet her & her grandmother in person for a Saturday afternoon tea.

These are fun, light reads that take place in post WWI Britain. It's obvious the author has done a lot of good research. I've read the later ones, now I'm catching up with the older ones. As Daisy would say "Spiffing!"
