The Marriage Test by Suzanne Redfearn

2.0

Eh. I wanted a quick read today and I picked this one up. Overall, I wasn't impressed and it wasn't very memorable. Ava is engaged to Justin, who she's known for three months. She wanted to get married when her grandmother (who was just diagnosed with colon cancer) could be there. (There is nothing that indicates that grandma is going to kick the bucket any time soon, so there is no reason to rush to the alter, but alas...).

As part of her family's tradition, if the couple can secure a frigate egg and make a cake with it, they will last in marriage. Justin isn't exactly thrilled about going on this journey but agrees and they take a friend as a witness. There is a conflict between Justin and his friend and this isn't fleshed out. There is a conversation Ava overhears and is never mentioned again.

I guess these are flaws with short stories/novellas, but these kinds of loose threads bother me.
