This was simultaneously way better than I expected and also just as great as I thought. I guess you could say it lives up to the YA hype of 2017. I should’ve read it then but just never did.
The choppy writing style lends itself so well to helping us get into Cady’s point of view. Lockhart does a great job of portraying this wholly unreliable narrator and keeping the reveals and twists secrets until they are meant to be known. I really did not see the twist at the end coming at all, even though I knew arson was involved somehow. I thought the heartbreaking detail about the 2 golden retrievers was enough of a twist on its own because I did have to take a moment to pause after reading that.
Overall, a great YA suspenseful read. Would recommend.
