Mackenzie's Mountain by Linda Howard
1.0
Well that was godawful and this is going to be a mess.
I knew I wasn't going to like it when the first 30 second of the audiobook were just the male protagonist staring out a window repeatedly thinking 'he needed a woman' but I couldn't believe half of the stuff that came out of the character's mouths and I could not stop listening to it.
I can get past the aggressive-sexist-caveman male characters, because I was expecting it going in, but I couldn't get around the way she treated minorities in this book. There was a character with a mental illness who was either babied or mocked through the book and then turned out to be the bad guy. Then there was a never ending referral of mixed race characters as 'half-breeds', and a references to the male lead's 'animal instincts' from his 'ancient tribal heritage'.
I think she was trying to write a book about the terrible way Native Americans can be treated in small towns but it really just came off as ignorant and racist.
The main character was sexually assaulted and asked her boyfriend to stay with her the same night so she would feel safe. He had to jerk off in the shower so that he wouldn't be too turned on by her sleeping in the same bed.
Also, because of the weird things the characters kept saying ('renegade indians' 'old maid school teacher' 'widow Jane a few mile west'), I started this book thinking that it was set in the old west, and then they started driving cars.
The plot was decent as Linda Howard goes, but anything good about this book was overshadowed by the insane amount of racism and sexism.
Some samples of the A+ writing:
'are you a half-breed?'
'her skin was as fine milled as an infants'
'don't worry, I only rape on Tuesdays'
'he had the bronzed skin and dark hair of a half breed'
'his pretty teacher would be lucky if his dad didn't have her on her back before a word could come out of her mouth' (said by the 16 year old son of the male protagonist)
