Prophet Song by Paul Lynch

dark emotional tense slow-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? No
  • Loveable characters? It's complicated
  • Diverse cast of characters? No
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

The text is beautiful, and creates tension, but it is difficult to read - although it gets easier with practice. I don't know if the beauty justifes the barrier to comprehension.

I was so angry with Eilish for not attempting to leave at once. I was so frustrated the whole book- but I get that is the point. This happens to thousands of people around the world.

Pride and resentment towards her sister is one of the reasons she doesn't leave which was that irrational personal emotions overshadowing the reality of what was happening in Dublin. And the reality of her sister just loving her and wanting Eilish safe.

One thing that I felt wasn’t very developed was Eilish as a working woman. Her job, her career, was an unimportant footnote. It doesn't help her shed light on what is going on - as a Scientist my response to the pandemic for instance was to obsess over statistics - nor her thought patterns, nor even the plot appart from her getting fired.

I liked the modern setting with use of phoned.
