Strange Meeting by Susan Hill
4.0
This was so well written - Hill sparse prose is ideal to showcase the quiet shock of what I imagine that IWW must have been and the very English feeling of have a cup of tea and carry on. Hilliard exemplifies that as a morose man with a distant family but Hill plays with that by introducing Barton. Barton, who is expansive and expressive, who not only makes himself essential to the company for his good humour, but very quickly becomes dear to Hilliard. I was so invested in them, I really wanted them to get away from it all and have a long life.
I was hesitating about my lgbtqia tag because I know some people might read it just as a "great friendship" but when have I put other people's interpretations above mine in my own review? But this also should serve as a sign that it's not clearly lgbtqia if that's what you're looking for.
