Not That Bad: Dispatches from Rape Culture by Roxane Gay

5.0

CW: Discussions of sexual violence and murder (This review and also the book)

Really powerful, informative, and moving!
As a BIPOC non-binary/trans-feminine person the realities that many BIPOC femmes face (sexual harassment, sexual assault, rape, murder, etc.) has become an ever-growing concern for me. It was one of the things that had given me pause when contemplating transition. That said, I still chose to move forward with HRT and ignorance is very much not bliss. Although these essays are hard to read/listen to (I consumed the audiobook vice the hard copy/ebook), I would implore you to check this book out.

The following essays had a profound effect on me:
"The Sun" by Emma Smith-Stevens
"I Said Yes" by Anthony Frame
"Why I Didn't Say No" by Elissa Bassist

The audiobook is phenomenally done as well and I recommend that method, as it felt very powerful hearing different folks narrate each chapter!
