The Stars We Steal
by Alexa Donne
THE STARS WE STEAL by Alexa Donne. A sci-fi YA retelling of Jane Austen’s Persuasion.
Full disclosure, I picked up this book from the school library because of the pretty cover. However, in the first chapter I figured out real quick that it was a retelling of Persuasion, so I knew how the story would go. There were interesting elements with the sci-fi setting, Earth’s inhabitants residing in giant spaceships divided between the rich and poor. I wished they had explored this dynamic more than the angst between Elliot and Leo (Anne and Captain Wentworth in the original). The book tried too hard to appeal to modern day teen audiences through the “retro” or vintage touches in this futuristic world. Like their past was our present...idk. It took me a minute to finally sit down and finish it. I recommend FOR DARKNESS SHOWS THE STARS by Diana Peterfreund which is also a sci-fi/post apocalyptic retelling of Persuasion.
