Sophie's Choice by William Styron

5.0

When I checked this out from the library, I opened it up and wondered if I'd be able to finish it in a month. It is long... very long. However, there are 3 main stories going on throughout the novel, and they are intricately intertwined. I know that there's a lot out there in terms of "Holocaust Literature" and that sometimes it can be daunting and overly dark, but the perspective of Sophie as a survivor retelling her experiences years later in America somehow softens the blow. Where it is painful to read about her horrifying early life and see the huge mistakes she makes in the present, the naivete of the narrator, Stingo, helps keep the story manageable as you peel back each layer of the characters.
