Sense and Sensibility
by Jane Austen
Another satisfying Austen read. Just as in Mansfield Park, I am always disappointed when Austen decides to describe the climax/conclusion of the story from a distance. Why does she choose to describe Edward’s marriage proposal to Elinor almost as an afterthought? As the reader, I wish to hear him stammer and hedge and finally ask her. And Colonel Brandon’s proposal as well, although I do understand that one being left to a distant recount by the narrator, since it was said to be a gradual, slow attachment between the two lovers. Aside from the ending not being as exciting and personal as I would have liked, the book was enjoyable and I had the extra pleasure of reading the annotated version which really helped my understanding of the time period and certain sayings and descriptions which have always been a bit of a mystery to me in 18th century British novels.
