Although there are some things I personally would’ve done differently, this book is amazingly written. I enjoyed Zhu’s story a lot and looked forward to her chapters everytime. Personally I enjoyed Ouyangs chapters less, but I can see why Shelley made the choice to include his POV.
This book is anything but predictable even though you do know that Zhu will achieve her greatness. I am looking forward to the next book to see how Zhu’s and Ma’s relationship will develop as I am looking forward to see Wang Boaxiangs further part in the story.
If you want to pick up this book, be aware that there is a lot of warfare and war talk in this book. Politics have a big role.
If you liked this book I’d also recommend the Poppy War by RF Kuang and vice versa.
