The Golden Enclaves by Naomi Novik

wanted to love it

I really, really wanted to love this. I absolutely devoured the first book. I desperately waited the sequel. I had countdowns set up for the finale.

It was just not what I expected. It was heavy, and dark, and horrifying, which I don’t hate, but I enjoyed it more when it was bolstered by El’s revelation of love and friendship. This book felt like it took place mostly in El’s head, and maybe should have taken place mainly between El and her therapist.

There are some incredible, powerful scenes in this book. It makes me want to smash power structures. It makes me want to eat the rich. But it never made me want to pick it up. There was joy in the first two books- this one was mainly trauma.

Idk. It was well written. It was a powerful message. It wrapped everything up beautifully. I just didn’t enjoy it as much as I hoped. I would still recommend the series- no Game of Thrones catastrophe here- but maybe with a caveat: it’s heavier than you think!
