This is a true crime book that manages to do something different. Perhaps that has more to do with the age of the book, or the fact that the author was more interested in the lives of the subjects than their deaths. Either way, the look into the effect homicide has on small communities was an interesting angle. It wasn't one I was as fascinated with as I wanted to be, but I think that comes down to the fact that I'm an avid true crime consumer and what we consume these days has a much larger air of sensationalism than this book did.
Regardless of my personal consumption preferences, Trillin writes well. The reader can tell he is an investigative journalist with integrity. His stories are respectful but do not sacrifice the facts surrounding the victims' lives and deaths. If you prefer short stories and human interest pieces, this might be the true crime book for you.
