We Could Be So Good by Cat Sebastian

Genre: historical romance (1950s)

Wow. I saw a few of my favourite peeps reading and raving about this one, and I just knew I had to find out why they loved it so much. And let me say, shout it actually, IT IS WORTHY OF ALL THE LOVE!!!

I have not read a ton of historical romance - only two to be precise, and both were recommendations from ___ my go-to for anything HR, so I was feeling pretty confident when my Libby hood came in.

I also do not read a ton of friends-to-lovers, as I don’t always like the trope or how it is written. But man alive, Cat Sebastian gave me no other choice than to love it this time with Andy and Nick’s story.

The friendship is truly the foundation that sets the tone for the whole book - their potential story together and their stories individually. The awakening of one’s sexuality and the awakening of one’s desire for more than secret meet-ups. Andy is precious, a little clueless  with directions and recipes, and always thinking one step ahead (even if it’s worry-filled). Nick is generous, sarcastic and fiercely protective.

The way this book handles the subject of being queer in the late 50s, the risks of outing a partner unintentionally simply by living and enjoying life, family dynamics with blood family, as well as found family…it was just so beautifully written. Half way through, I knew there would be tears. I was so invested in Nick and Andy’s story, their love for one another, their fears of making the jump, their hopes for what it could be like….gah! just everything. Please, go read this book!

(Also, I listened to the audiobook, and man, the narrator was fantastic - I felt like I was transported back to 1958)
