Agamemnon by Aeschylus

5.0

After years away from home, fighting the Trojan War, Agamemnon returns home to his wife, Clymenestra. However, Clymenestra has not been patiently pining for her lover as Penelope did for Odysseus. Rather, she has planned to get revenge on her husband for offering their daughter as a sacrifice.

People way smarter than I am have explained how Aeschylus wrote this trilogy to address current Athenian politics: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1247696077?book_show_action=true

Some stand out quotes:
“In war, the first casualty is truth.”

"Let good prevail! So be it! Yet what is good? And who is God?"

“Wisdom comes through suffering.
Trouble, with its memories of pain,
Drips in our hearts as we try to sleep,
So men against their will
Learn to practice moderation.
Favours come to us from gods.”
