I'm with the Band: Confessions of a Groupie by Pamela Des Barres

adventurous challenging dark emotional informative reflective medium-paced

3.0

it certainly was a juicy, salacious tell-all about the rock and roll scene of the late 60s and early 70s. did i enjoy these parts? well, yes!!

i liked pamela throughout this book, it was written very casually and i felt like i knew her - i cared about her! i really did want the best for her.

however, i was SUFFERING through her recounting the abuse and mistreatment she endured. the worst part was the fact that it is never depicted that way! it was always: “[insert famous rockstar here] is AMAZING and oh do i love him dearly! <3” for every single one to do exactly the same thing as the last (abuse her/manipulate her/cheat with an underage girl).

the lack of self-awareness that a biography normally includes was completely non-existent. at not point was it clear that she had grown or learnt from any of these experiences. it was written in the 80s, though, so maybe it’s a bit unfair to project current values onto her

imagine my horror when after 400 pages (slog…) of pamela telling us about the actions of these dirty rockstars, even going as far as to marry one, she’s ended up right where she started; lost, single and still drooling over such men!!! it just made me a bit sad. :-(
